Ambazonian Fighters Attack Cameroon Governor’s Convoy, Wound Four Soldiers

At least four soldiers have been wounded after Pro-independence fighters attacked the convoy of the Governor of the South West, one of the two restive English-speaking regions of Cameroon, Tuesday, February 12, 2019, locals have told National Telegraph.

According to sources, Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai was en route to Kumba, a war-torn town in Cameroon’s South West Region where a government hospital was burnt down, Monday, February 11, 2019 before his convoy was attacked.

Governor Bernard Okalia Bilai was going to the Kumba District Hospital to take stock of the fire incident that consumed most parts of the hospital, including vehicles and leaving four patients dead before a group of armed men said to be Ambazonian fighters attacked his motorcade, National Telegraph has been told.

Reports say the Governor’s convoy was first hit by fighters around between Muyuka and Ekona, two restive South West towns where several bullets were fired, leaving four soldiers wounded, said a source to National Telegraph.

According to sources at the Kumba District Hospital, the wounded soldiers are being treated in the parts of the hospital that weren’t burnt while the Governor is chairing a crisis meeting on the fire incident with Hospital officials.

In the meantime, sources that witnessed the fire incident have told National Telegraph that government soldiers burnt down the hospital after they thought Ambazonian fighters were being treated there.

Sources also said this isn’t the first time the military is burning down medical installations. Another hospital in Konye, a not-too-far restive town from Kumba had been burnt down alongside some patients. There have been reports of soldiers shooting and killing even medical personnel.

Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Anglophone militias are attacking the Governor’s convoy or that of top government officials. Okalia convoy had been attacked in Lebialem, another restive South West district where a soldier was killed and several others wounded.

In same Lebialem, the convoy of the topmost government personnel of the Division was attacked and one person killed. Ungitoh Zachary Cheikoh, who served as Senior Divisional Officer was attacked and one of his collaborators, a Divisional Delegate of State Property, Surveys and Land Tenure killed in the convoy.

In Small Ekombe, another restive South West town, the convoy of the Minister of Defense, Joseph Beti Assomo was attacked leaving some soldiers wounded. Several other top government officials have been as well attacked in the North West.

The two English-speaking regions of the North West and South West have remained tensed following an armed conflict in which the majority of the Anglophones are asking for an Independent state called Ambazonia.
