Fun Facts About Otters
Of the 13 species of otters in the world, 12 require freshwater access and only one species resides in the ocean. The smallest species is the Asian small-clawed otter, ranging in size from 4.4 to 11 pounds and they’re about half the length of the largest otter species, the Southern sea otters which are approximately four feet in length. Southern sea otters have the densest fur of all mammals in order to stay insulated in cooler waters. While there are many differences among species, they share one thing in common: threats to their natural environments. Southern sea otters are an endangered species and Asian small-clawed otters are listed as vulnerable.
