Haitian Revolutions: Crash Course World History #30

Ideas like liberty, freedom, and self-determination were hot stuff in the late 18th century, as evidenced by our recent revolutionary videos. Although freedom was breaking out all over, many of the societies that were touting these ideas relied on slave labor. Few places in the world relied so heavily on slave labor as Saint-Domingue, France’s most profitable colony. Slaves made up nearly 90% of Saint-Domingue’s population, and in 1789 they couldn’t help but hear about the revolution underway in France. All the talk of liberty, equality, and fraternity sounds pretty good to a person in bondage, and so the slaves rebelled. This led to not one but two revolutions, and ended up with France, the rebels, Britain, and Spain all fighting in the territory. Spoiler alert: the slaves won. So how did the slaves of what would become Haiti throw off the yoke of one of the world’s great empires? John Green tells how they did it, and what it has meant in Haiti and in the rest of the world.

  1. "The British, who you will recall were also at war with France…" when were we NOT at war with France before the 1900s. Literally it was as much as possible, it was great.

  2. why do you talk about 15,000 years of history? The span of recorded history is roughly 5,000 years, beginning with Sumerian Cuneiform script; the oldest discovered form of coherent writing from the protoliterate period around the 30th century BC.

  3. I’m not Haitian but I’m proud of Haiti ❤️❤️✊🏾✊🏽✊🏿 They did it for all of our ansestors much love the inspired other enslaved people to fight back and gave them pride. So proud of u Haiti ❤️❤️❤️ THANK U

  4. When people say that we sold our soul the devil, you need to know that the life expectancy of Africans coming over to Haiti to work on plantation was 3 to 7 years, that means after 3 or 7 years they worked them death and they have to go back to Africa to get some more Africans for 3 to 7 more years and wait for the next season to renew their stock. Noted that they killed all the Arawak/taino natives that was living in the land when Christopher Columbus got there.the selling our soul to the devil was a propaganda started by white people because they couldn't believe that we beat one of the most powerful nation at the time. It was a consensus in the west to make an example of Haiti, to destroy the Country mentally, economically and physically, because they still needed the slave in all the colonies around the world to work in the plantations. The idea was to strangle Haiti starting by forcing them to pay the equivalent of 21 billion dollars today, it took 100 years and still they couldn't come up with the original amount because it was more. The west(Spain, the USA,France, England) got together and menaced to occupy Haiti, keep in mind that Haiti is 5 times smaller than Florida. We started freedom for black and brown people, that's all you need to know. Who do you think is the devil now?

  5. John said that the French lost in Haiti due to disease and the French getting sick not the superior fighting ability of the black Haitians. Are you telling me the French who colonized Haiti in 1625 and stayed there for 177 years and raped the women long enough to create an entire Mulatto population suddenly becomes allergic to the Haitians in 1800 and died from disease. No the French were allergic to knives and bullets to the face. The Haitians won the Haitian revolution due to superior fighting ability not because the French died from disease.

  6. As an educator and a parent, I enjoy your videos but wish you could use other artwork than topless women. I have had to look at other Youtubers for videos because I will NOT show videos with pictures of topless women in my classes.

  7. to all the whites complaining about the 1804 massacre, blame your own people lol. Louverture actually wanted to have a diverse white, black, and mulatto haiti but your french dudes arrested him so that means dessalines was ruler. and he wanted the opposite so yea. they played themselves

  8. I dont support the Haitian massacre of 1804 against whites on the island, i don't support murder at all.

But all i'm saying is, if you hate the Haitians because of that…you better not be supportive of the Americans gaining their independence at the cost of British, Native-American, and black lives.

It was obvious why the Haitians didn't trust white people after going through so much hell. It's sad that things had to go that way but thats just the way they went. I think about 3000-5000 died, but keep in mind, there were never that many whites on the island to begin with in comparison to the color population.

  9. You forgot to mention the reparations france demanded from Haiti for the loss of revenue through slavery, which took Haitians 127years to pay. You also forgot to mention that there was a trade blockade that prevebted Haiti from trading with othet nations plus the real deeper meaning is Haiti wasn't allowed to thrive because white supremacists could let Haiti be an example of success to africans and ADOS In the americas
