Tamil language, member of the Dravidian language family, spoken primarily in India. It is the official language of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and the union territory of Puducherry (Pondicherry). It is also an official language in Sri Lanka and Singapore and has significant numbers of speakers in Malaysia, Mauritius, Fiji, and South Africa. In 2004 Tamil was declared a classical language of India, meaning that it met three criteria: its origins are ancient; it has an independent tradition; and it possesses a considerable body of ancient literature. In the early 21st century more than 66 million people were Tamil speakers.

The earliest Tamil writing is attested in inscriptions and potsherds from the 5th century bce. Three periods have been distinguished through analyses of grammatical and lexical changes: Old Tamil (from about 450 bce to 700 ce), Middle Tamil (700–1600), and Modern Tamil (from 1600). The Tamil writing system evolved from the Brahmi script. The shape of the letters changed enormously over time, eventually stabilizing when printing was introduced in the 16th century ce. The major addition to the alphabet was the incorporation of Grantha letters to write unassimilated Sanskrit words, although a few letters with irregular shapes were standardized during the modern period. A script known as Vatteluttu (“Round Script”) is also in common use.

Spoken Tamil has changed substantially over time, including changes in the phonological structure of words. This has created diglossia—a system in which there are distinct differences between colloquial forms of a language and those that are used in formal and written contexts. The major regional variation is between the form spoken in India and that spoken in Jaffna (Sri Lanka), capital of a former Tamil city-state, and its surrounds. Within Tamil Nadu there are phonological differences between the northern, western, and southern speech. Regional varieties of the language intersect with varieties that are based on social class or caste.

Like the other Dravidian languages, Tamil is characterized by a series of retroflex consonants (/ḍ/, /ṇ/, and /ṭ/) made by curling the tip of the tongue back to the roof of the mouth. Structurally, Tamil is a verb-final language that allows flexibility regarding the order of the subject and the object in a sentence. Adjectives and relative, adverbial, and infinitive clauses normally precede the term they modify, while inflections such as those for tense, number, person, and case are indicated with suffixes.

  1. 2. #Thamizhan thamizh is not only the just for language!
It's fully generated based on natural vibrations of human body!
    For example:
Happy – makizhchi, angry- kobam, self- suyam, taste- suvai, feeling- unarchi, once u prounance this word , u can feel happiness symptoms from your body , same like other words am mentioned! even u don't know the meaning of the word . Let's try this magic feel guys. This is also one of unique identify of THAMIZH.

  3. Tamil has 70000, 60000 years old DNA people also. 60000 years DNA old people tamil sheduled cast people. 70000 years old peoples are near madurai. Pira malai Kallar cast. Middle cast. Discovered by discovery channel society. Such scheduled cast, came from bottom of eastern himalaya, also has 60000 years old DNA, living tamil hills station.

  4. Very proud of you bro , being non tamilian …how much respect you have for us …..we welcome u in all of our hearts…please watch about lemuria i.e kumari kandam in tamil submerged continent under the sea which shows nearly 40000 years ago tamilian has lived

  5. Let me tell u another interesting fact that thamizh language has a special letter 'ழ' (zha) whereas none of the other language in the world has that particular word…..n of course thamizh (தமிழ்)language is the first &oldest language of the world

  6. There are some claims going around that Tamil is infact a language older than Sanskrit which is completely not true..

First of all let us recognize the beauty of Tamil. And let us recognize that Tamil is the only major language of India(other than English) which didn't evolve from Sanskrit..

But the claim that Tamil is older than Sankrit?? No way.. Here is some rational thinking on this

Most tamil scholars will always say that just because Tamil borrowed a few words from Sanskrit doesnt mean Tamil evolved from Sanskrit. And I give them that. But the fact that tamil borrowed from Sanskrit and not other way around immediately proves that Sanskrit is older than Tamil.
Even more solid proof is in Rig Veda. Rig Veda is the holiest of all holy hindu books. It is considered to be the oldest book.. Every hindi holy book defers to Rig Veda as the ultimate authority. Is Rig Veda in Tamil? NO. The mantras of Rig Veda are wrtten in Sanskrit and not tamil..

Other Tamil literatures like Kambar Ramayan is based on Sanskrit version of Ramayan written by Valmiki.
If Tamil is indeed older than Sanskrit, then why isn't the holiest bookof Hindus like Gita, Ramayan, Puranas originally in Tamil?

Tamil deserves recognition but it is definitely NOT older than Sanskrit.
Sanskrit is still the top language no doubt

The heart of my argument is this. If Tamil is indeed older than Sanskrit, then I ask them show me just ONE Tamil book or literature older than Rig Veda? That is impossible as nothing is older than Rig Veda in Indian subcontinent

  7. So what and who cares. Only tamils in TN and 'tamilians' who live in srilanka, malaysia and singapore cares.

We rest of indians have nothing to do with tamil, neither any tamil words are there in north indian languages nor tamil has anything related to vedas etc.

Sanskrit is the sacred language for Indians and is the language of GODS.

Even the other dravidians like malayalis, kannadigas and telugus respect sanskrit and feel proud about it.

  8. Vanakkam, I’m from the United States and a beginning learner of the beautiful Tamil language or rather “thamizh” as I have been corrected numerous times 😂
I started learning Tamil because a man I had met is from Sri Lanka and I told him I spoke many languages, in which he said I doubt you speak mine, I challenged him and when he said Tamil, I had no idea what it was.
Researching, I found that Thamizh is the recorded written language in the world.

All I know how to say is – Vanakkam, neengal eppadi irrekareergal (I believe I spelled it right) and naan nalam, nandri, good day you guys 💙

  9. Bro make video about keezhadi excavation 2500 years old found city in Tamilnadu.. but Indian government refuse still because if Indian knows Tamil only ruled once upon a time .. and one thing there is no god for us.. that's why Indian government reject that old city..

  10. Actually truth is Tamil people have no religion and caste and community.. only Tamil .. before Jesus born Tamil people trade with Roman ceazer…. That's why keezhadi excavation closed …

  11. My cousin went Angkor wat they guides told it's built by south Indian kings… Because south Indian once upon a time it's region name called kongu.. kongu peoples now in Tamilnadu Coimbatore city.. u search about kongu region in history.. that's why all our historical maps not Tamilnadu only not captured any other kings… Real truth is already India ruled by Tamil.. king Himayavarman whom ruled upto Himalayas.. actually when somanath temple destroyed by Muhammed ghajini and the information came late to Rajendra cholan.. see the history who is Rajendra cholan one who never defeat anyone. If Rajendra cholan army came mean opponent will piss the urine… 10 lakh trained army only had Rajendra cholan and the biggest navy and 60000 elephant he had ..that's why now our navy ship name rajendra

  12. 16 times failed Mohammad ghajini but actually Mohammad ghajini just fight with small kings in India.. if Mohammad ghajini knows Rajendra cholan came against mean he never came.. on that period no Tele communication.. Rajendra cholan busy in built in temple ..
