Ice Race – Exploitation of the Arctic: https://youtu.be/OAFTMGVACNw

The Arctic was one of the most important battlefields during the Cold War. Could this happen again?

Has the Cold War returned?
The battle for resources will intensify military activities in the north and the chances of confrontations occurring will increase. Energy reserves elsewhere in the world are in the process of becoming depleted, but there are still huge quantities of petroleum around the North Pole. The potential for conflict over these resources has resulted in a substantial increase in military activities in the Arctic during the last few years. Will we succeed in resolving this forthcoming energy crisis without resorting to the use military force?

The Arctic was an important military area during both the Second World War and the Cold War. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO placed priority on other areas of the world, but military focus on the Arctic has now returned with full force. In the first episode of the documentary series ICE RACE we will see how, like Norway and NATO, the Russians are now building up their military striking power in the north.

Someone who is witness to military developments in the Arctic on a daily basis is Johan Hætta, a pilot with 333 Squadron. From their base on Andøya intelligence-gathering aircraft belonging to the Squadron fly to some of the most inhospitable areas in the Arctic. One of their main tasks is to obtain as much intelligence as possible about the increasing Russian military activities in the area.

– “It is important to keep an eye on what your neighbours are doing,” says Hætta.

The Russian response has been one of considerable suspicion about Western military activities in the Arctic. The reasons for their suspicious are largely historical ones, because during the Cold War the opposing parties were willing to go to extremes in order to win. President Ronald Reagan’s former Security Adviser, Thomas Reed, talks about how the CIA sabotaged a Soviet gas pipeline at the beginning of the 1980s.

Speaking today Reed says: “The explosion was so powerful that it could be seen from space.”

In the documentary series “Ice Race” – “The War Game” shows that a global lack of oil and gas, food and other resources is turning the Arctic into one of the most important and most explosive areas in the world. How will this affect the world and what will the consequences be for the Artic?

  1. The Arctic was one of the most important battlefields during the Cold War. could this happen again? Is it happening again?

The Battle for resources will intensify and the chances of confrontation will increase. Energy reserves around the world are being depleted but the North Pole still has huge reserves of oil. Because of this, military activities in the Arctic has increased over the last few years.

The Arctic was an important military area during both WWII and the Cold War. Now, military focus on the Arctic has returned with full force.

In Part Two of this series, the War Game shows a global lack of oil and gas, food and other resources in turning the Arctic into one of the most important and potentially explosive areas in the world.

What will the consequences be and what can we do to avert the exploitation of one the last bastions of one of our planet's most important nature reserves

  2. The title should be "The Russian Aggression in the Arctic"
So the Russian are not allowed to build military base inside Russia but the US are allowed to build nuclear base in the Arctic 1000 miles away from Alaska? And have had 800 military base around the world and surounded them from Easteen Eurupe to Asia with ABM and nuclear missiles? Great. Psst somebody will say "A Russian Bot" the disinformation war against Russia is the new cold war.

  3. Very miserable and biased. Russia is just protecting its borders. USA is building nuclear weapons bases in the Arctic near the Russian border, and what happened when Russia did that in Cuba. You disappointed me with this documentary. Russia has not started a single conflict for decades, and what about the opposite side and the hundreds of wars and revolutions around the world

  4. The foolish game of exploiting the last quarter of non-renewable natural resources, that is exactly how they plan to create a sustainable future for generations to come. Ideally it shouldn't be even touched, but protected you mofos . This is not what I was being a patriot for..

DOCUMENTARIES LIKE THESE ARE A PERFECT MIRROR FOR SHOWCASING HOW POLITICS IS ENDING UP THE SURVIVAL OF MANKIND UNDER THE NAME OF ACQUIRING SOME PIECE OF LAND AND DIG IT UNTIL THEY REACH THE FREAKIN CORE.

  5. Russia doesn't want Arctic, just 49% as agreed upon UN charter in 48! At the time nobody cared about Arctic, so Stalin drew a line from eastern tip to western tip of Russian Continental Shell and islands that belong with! The entire North Est Arctic passage is on 11 time zones in Northern Russia! It was Reagan who made a minimum 200 ml belonging to those countries in possession of islands and coast lines!

  6. NATO needs to disband and countries which are geographically connected with Arctic will get a fair share, unless they try bullying Russia! Russia has 50 icebreakers, 20 nuclear and all fleet is ice fleet! Then, there are hypersonic missiles of the coast etc

  7. Russians completely lack empathy for other people.

How good would you feel if your workplace was bombed, your children could not go to school and someone turned off the heat in the middle of winter. EU and Ukraine quickly needs to build independence from Russia and I hope the EU does more to resolve the Ukraine conflict.
