Ambazonia, Cameroons English speaking neighbor, has been engulfed in a conflict that has claimed the lives of over 35,000 people. It's a crisis that deserves our attention, compassion, and collective action. In this article, we will delve into the crisis in Ambazonia, highlight the voices advocating for peace and justice, its time for all of Africa to raise including a list of 25 advocacy groups from across Africa who should dedicate their focus on raising awareness about this issue. The Children of Africa are dying. **The Crisis in Ambazonia** Ambazonia, a predominantly English-speaking country in Africa a neighbor to Cameroon, has been embroiled in a conflict since 2016. The conflict arose from grievances related to political representation, language discrimination, and calls for autonomy as a new state in Africa (restoring their independence stolen by LA Republique Du Cameroun. Unfortunately, it escalated into a violent struggle, leading to widespread suffering from #Cameroonian army and colonial regime and puppet to France hegemony in Africa. - *Humanitarian Crisis*: The crisis has caused a humanitarian disaster with thousands of people displaced from their homes, lack of access to essential services, and food insecurity. - *Violence and Human Rights Abuses*: Both government forces and non-state armed groups have been accused of human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings, torture, and abductions. - *Children's Plight*: The conflict has also had a devastating impact on children, with many unable to attend school due to insecurity, leading to a lost generation deprived of education. **Advocacy Groups: Amplifying Voices for Ambazonia** Advocacy groups across Africa have not at all played a crucial role in raising awareness about the Ambazonia crisis, they urgently need to start urging governments, organizations, #AfricanUnion and individuals to take action. Nigeria can Regain its Honour and Save Southern Cameroons from Genocide! Why did the Senator below speak with certainty about a lie without crosschecking his facts about Ambazonia whom he refers to as separatists? Was it ignorance or he intentionally spoke disparagingly against a people facing extermination just to give a dog a bad name and hang it? Nigeria must rise up above the petty mindedness and genocidal inclinations of Cameroun and play its role as the big brother that she is by applying the international commitment taken after the Rwanda genocide, known as the responsibility to protect (R2P), instead of shying away from its responsibility and escalating the conflict in the Cameroons, History will never forget that when Southern Cameroons, renamed as Ambazonia, left Enugu in 1954, there was no gun shot and no refugees crises nor were there any detentions and abuses of its citizens by Nigerians, rather His Excellency Tafawa Balewa was instead supportive of Southern Cameroons and encouraged her to make informed choices in order to avert this bloodbath which she is currently experiencing that has gone on for the last five years without any African nation raising an alarm. In the light of the genocide taking place in Southern Cameroons(Ambazonia, one will only be a beast to stay mute and shy away from speaking out when thousands are dying and millions are facing a humanitarian disaster as per the UN specialized organ's reports. I therefore, appeal to morally upright and responsible Nigerians to arise and ask the Nigerian government to stop being lured into committing more errors by supporting evil and by the same token, l kindly beg Nigerians to please join us to ask Cameroun why it is slaughtering Southern Cameroonians who simply rose up peacefully in 2017 and asked for an end to 60 years of genocide and systemic abuses? As a country that prides itself as a state of law, we wish to appeal to Nigeria especially the law makers and the custodians of the law like Hon Senator Dr Bwacha to put pressure on the government to implement only three of the several court cases won in the Abuja Federal High Court regarding the freedom and liberation of the Southern Cameroons and their leadership from tyranny. We are tired of bloodshed and the humiliation of Africa by Africans and the ways by which Africans treat their fellow human beings and shamelessly lie about it without qualms. Nigeria can set a precedence by reversing this downward spiral towards the abyss by just implementing the Abuja Federal High Court ruling of March 5, 200, which compelled Nigeria to stop treating Southern Cameroons as an integral part of la republique du Cameroun et al, Abuja Federal High Court Judgement of suit FHC/ABJ/CS/526/2013 and lastly, the most recent Abuja FHC ruling bearing on President Sisiku Ayuk Tabe and Co asking the Nigerian government to bring back the leaders of Ambazonia who were illegally abducted and sent back to Cameroun where they are currently serving life jail terms.

Cameroon: Mediation, Confidence Building, Humanitarian Aid, Education…. in Focus At Southern Cameroons High Level Retreat By Boris Esono Nwenfor Barrister Agbor Balla , Prof Anyangwe,Yerima, Dr Nyih, in discussion with Coalition Members Atem Henry , and Dr Foretia on the sidelines of the Retreat With the huge international involvement in the Retreat by some G-7 countries and the participation of the Swiss Government, the Coalition for Dialogue and negotiation, CDN, hopes that this retreat would lead to a broader international mediation of the conflict (Swiss 2.0) – which ties with the aspirations of many Southern Cameroonians, as expressed in different surveys. A CDN 2020 survey showed that more than 80% of Southern Cameroonians are in support of a multi-country international mediation of the conflict. The retreat organized by CDN ran from Thursday, Oct 28, 2021, through Monday, November 1, 2002, in Toronto, Canada. The high-level leadership retreat brought together a very diverse group of Southern Cameroonian leaders across religious, traditional authorities, civil society, Non-State Armed Groups (NSAGs), women’s and youths’ groups. High profile attendees among Cameroonian civil society included: Prof Carlson Anyangwe who been one of the most articulate voices of the Southern Cameroons case across generations, the moderator of the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon Rt Rev Fonki Samuel, the Arch Bishop Emeritus Esua, Barrister Agbor Balla of CHRDA, the US-based US Institute of Peace (USIP) Award-winning Peace Crusader, Esther Omam, former SDF MP for Boyo Paulinus Jua amongst others. The Ambazonian NSAGs attendees included: AGOVC Vice-chair, Dr Julius Nyih; IG-Care (of Sisiku AyukTabe) by its Vice President, Yerima Yapney; Consortium leader, John Mbah Akuroh; amongst others, while representatives from three G-7 Countries, including Switzerland and officials involved in the Swiss-led-Mediation- Process participated from the international community. Panelists on the retreat include leading peace and conflict resolution practitioners from renowned institutions in Ireland (they prefer not to be named), Canadian and U.S. Universities. According to sources, the Retreat followed Chatham house rules, with participants able to freely express themselves without fear or intimidation. “The starting building block of the retreat was building trust amongst Southern Cameroonians and it started by asking the question: what is the problem that is dividing us? Among the range of answers proposed is the necessity of having more of these face-to-face encounters among Southern Cameroonian leaders so they can better understand each other even in their differences; unity in diversity,” a source told PAV. Participants at the retreat enthused on the need to cultivate and begin nurturing trust among the Southern Cameroonian leaders across religious, traditional, civil society and NSAGs lines. Also in focus were animated discussions on a framework to enhance access to education, humanitarian aid and to uphold human rights and key principles and fundamentals to guide mediation and negotiations Speaking about the expectations of the Retreat Dr Denis Foretia, Co-Chair of the Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiations (CDN) noted that “Everyone knows that there is no military solution to this war. The government cannot win militarily. We must find all ways to bring peace and that is only possible when there is a broad consensus on the process to achieve a mediated settlement. This retreat will help Southern Cameroonian leaders and other key stakeholders define that pathway.” The Ambazonian Coalition Team (ACT) which has been claiming a monopoly of access to the Swiss mediation process was amongst the high profile absentee at the Southern Cameroons Leadership Retreat. It is, however, unclear how the post-retreat environment would work for ACT considering that the Swiss Government and officials of the Swiss mediation process were in attendance in Toronto but ACT was absent. The Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiation is, however, determined to ensure an inclusive Southern Cameroonian side for negotiations and is scheduled to pursue conversations with the ACT team post-retreat to get them to work together with the other NSAGs. Since 2017, a war of secession has seen deadly fighting between government forces and separatists. Both sides have committed widespread atrocities, leading to thousands of deaths and the displacement of approximately half a million people, either internally or as refugees in neighbouring countries. The necessity of having more of these face-to-face encounters among Southern Cameroonian leaders so they can better understand each other even in their differences was strongly expressed at the Retreat Despite the holding of the Major National Dialogue by the government, a dialogue that many found wanting, the fighting ongoing in the North West and South West Regions of the country has not slowed down but instead intensified in recent months and this has hampered joint engagement toward dialogue to end the civil war. In its latest report, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, highlighted the impact the violence has had on education: “Since the beginning of the crisis in 2016, education has been highly affected. Many schools have closed to avoid frequent attacks against education facilities. Teachers and students have been attacked, kidnapped, threatened and killed. In 2021, more than 700, 000 children are deprived of education in the South West and North West Regions.” About the Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiations The Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiations, CDN is an international non-governmental organization with the specific goal of facilitating dialogue and negotiation towards ending the war in Anglophone Southern Cameroons. PRINCE EKOSSO WAS RIGHT ABOUT THE TRANSFERING OF CDC FROM BOTA TO YAOUNDE!! Why the sale of the CDC to Tylium of Egypt, Fertilore and Timac of France is Null and Void. An explanatory extract from Dr. Nfor N Susungi 1. It has come to our attention through the news media that the CDC, the largest employer after the Cameroon government has been handed over to foreign investors. A CDC protocol agreement signed on Wednesday 20th June, 2018 in Yaounde finally brought to reality the much rumoured speculation of privatisation. Three companies are involved: Tylium from Egypt, Fertilore and Timac Agro from France are the new owners of the multi agro industrial establishment in Southern Cameroons. 2. Cameroon Concord News sources revealed that Tylium is interested in the palm oil and rubber sectors, while the two French firms want to revamp production and fertilization of the CDC plantations. Present during the signing of the protocol agreement were the Minister of Agriculture and Rural development and the General Manager of Cameroon Development Corporation, Njie Franklin Ngoni. 3. It is my duty as a Southern Cameroonian, a bonafide Elite of BAKWERI COMMUNITY and Chairman of United Socialist Democratic Party (USDP) to join my voice with that of Dr. Nfor N Susungi in informing national and international public that this transaction is null and void for two basic reasons: (1) Because the government of LRC has no locus standi in such a transaction and; (2) Because the people of the Former British Southern Cameroons were not consulted in this transaction. 4. The validity of these two reasons for rendering null and void the transaction stems from the very origins of the CDC (Cameroon Development Corporation) itself. 5. The CDC was at its inception the brain child of a young German financier/tycoon Karl Ludwig (AKA Max Esser) who founded a company called Westafrikanische Pflanzungsgesellschaft Victoria (WAPV) and Westafrikanische Pflanzungsgesellschaft Bibundi (WAPB) Max Esser went to Bali to negotiate a labour supply agreement with Galega II, the Fon of Bali in 1894 by which Galega II would be empowered to recruit and send labourers to Karl Ludwig's plantations on the coast. 6. The availability of practicality free labour coming from Galega I the Chief labour contractor enabled Max Esser to expand his cocoa, banana and rubber plantations very quickly and before long his estates covered over 20,000 hectares stretching from Muyuka to Bibundi and with the steady export of produce to Germany, Karl Ludwig became one of the richest men in Germany and received a special medal from Emperor. 7. When Galega I died in 1904 he was succeeded by his son Tita Gwenjang Fonyonga II. In 1905 Fonyonga II was proclaimed paramount chief (Auberhauptlinge) by German Captain (Hauptman) Hans Glauning of the Bamenda station in front of the Chiefs of some 45 villages of the Menemo and Moghamo ethnic groups over whom the Germans gave him paramountcy. He was given the power and means to recruit plantation labour over all these ethnic groups. 8. However when the Germans were driven from their colony of Deutche Kamerun in 1916 by the an Anglo French allied force, the German colony was divided between France and the United Kingdom, with France keeping 2/3rds of the territory. However, the United Kingdom acquired the part the part that was thereafter known as the British Cameroons which included the territory on which the German plantations were located. 9. When this demarcation was confirmed in the treaty of Versailles in 1918, the British Government decided to place the German plantations under the "The Custodian of Enemy Properties". However the British Government later decided to offer the plantation owners the possibility of reacquiring their estates through an auction. The same German investors continued to operate the plantations till WWII. 10. When Germany again lost WWII the United Kingdom once again expropriated the the coastal German plantations and placed them under the Custodian of Enemy Properties. 11. In 1946, the United Kingdom signed the UN Trusteeship Treaty with the United Nations by which the territory of British Cameroons was entrusted by the United Nations to the United Kingdom as the Administering Authority. The British Government proceeded to split the territory into Northern Cameroons and Southern Cameroons with the latter being governed under the McPherson constitution of 1951 as part of the Eastern region of Nigeria. 12. In 1947, the Legislative Council in Lagos Nigeria decided to create a statutory corporation to collectively manage the German estates at the foot of Mount Cameroon in the British Southern Cameroons which had been seized from German plantation owners at the end of WWII and placed under the Custodian of Enemy Properties. The statutory corporation was named Cameroon Development Corporation (CDC). 13. Following the creation of the CDC as a statutory corporation, the United Nations Trusteeship Council which was the highest legislative organ over the UN trust territories (including the British Cameroons which was governed as part of the Nigerian Federation) adopted a resolution in 1948 stating that the mandate of the CDC was to manage the former German plantations for the benefit of the people of the British Southern Cameroons. 14. This is a very important historical detail because the implication of the resolution of resolution of the UN Trusteeship Council is that the CDC is effectively the collective inheritance of the people of the British Southern Cameroons. 15. The Bakweri Land Claims Committee (BLCC) was born in 1948 to lay claims to the lands that were expropriated from the Bakweri people by the German colonial administration following the defeat of the people of "Lower Buea" in 1895 in a battle against a German force led by Rittmeister Maximilian von Stetten and the death of Chief Kuva Likenye of Lower Buea. 16. For decades the CDC has been the largest agroindustrial complex that grows and processes (for export ) mainly banana, rubber, Palm oil, Palm kernel. It is the second largest employer with a workforce of around 22,000 employees. 17. During the 1990s the Cameroon government was required to privatise state owned enterprises as as part of the conditionality of the World Bank/IMF for receiving debt cancellation under HIPCs program. 18. Attempts by the Biya regime to privatise the.CDC failed because the attempt was opposed by the Bakweri Land Claims Committee which filed a case at the African Commission for Human and Peoples Rights in the Gambia to reinforce its claims on the land. 19. But the other reason why the Biya Regime could not privatise the CDC is because the government cannot provide legal proof that the enterprise is owned by the government of LRC. Indeed it's origins in the Legislative Council in Lagos and the 1948 resolution of the UN Trusteeship Council shows that it is owned by the people of the British Southern Cameroons. 20. A presidential decree made public on 20 January 2016 states that the government of LRC became the sole share holder of the CDC. This decree is an act of expropriation under international law and the expropriation was carried out in violation of the UN statutory instrument which brought it into being in 1948 and without the consultation of the people of the Southern Cameroons. 21. From the foregoing backgrounds information it is clear that the Biya regime has no legitimacy to offer any part of the CDC to CDC to Tylium of Egypt, Fertilore and Timac of France becsuse the CDC remains the collective and historical inheritance of the people of the British Southern Cameroons by virtue of the UN Trusteeship Council Resolution of 1948. 22. The decision of the Biya Regime to transform the CDC into a joint stock company whose shares are100% owned by LRC is an illegal act of expropriation which shall be challenged eventually in the appropriate courts by the Bakweri Land Claims Community (BLCC), SWELA and Southern Cameroonian population in general. 23. The acquisition of the CDC by the Egyptian and the French company should never be accepted by the Bakweri people, SWELA, and by Southern Cameroons in general for the following reasons: (I) the Bakweri people, and SWELA who are the beneficial owners of the CDC were not consulted; (ii) the matter of the Bakweri Land Claims Committee which went to the African Commission on Human and People's Rights was not addressed (iii) at a moment in history when the people of the Southern Cameroons are in a State of war which was declared on them on December 2, 2017, the Biya Regime cannot sell the assets that are part of their collective inheritance in order to raise the money to wage a war against the beneficial owners of the assets. 24. For these reasons it is our duty to inform the general public that the privatisation protocol by which the CDC was said to have been acquired by Tylium of Egypt and Fertilore and Timac of France is null and void. 25. The BAKWERI People in particular and the SWELA deserve due respect for what rightly belongs to them. In the meantime, the representatives of the respective companies shall not be allowed access to any part of the CDC plantations until the process and necessary consultation with the appropriate legitimate owners of CDC is done. May God saves the BAKWERI people, the Sons and Daughters of SW, and the entire Southern Cameroonian Community.

JULY 2021 New anti-Biya protests took place in Geneva. Cameroonians abroad have once again protested against the presence of their president in Switzerland, outside Cameroon. As in 2019, overflows were observed. Protesters made several attempts to break through the police cordon in front of the Intercontinental Hotel, where the presence of Paul Biya, 88, and President of Cameroon for 39 years, was reported.First authorized, then banned the day before, the demonstration still took place on Saturday. At the heart of the recriminations: Switzerland among others. The demonstrators accused the Swiss state of protecting "a dictator" who allegedly killed more than 3,000 members of the English-speaking minority in the North West and South West of Cameroon. We met Sylvain Thévoz with whom we spoke on this subject. Mr. Sylvain Thévoz (PS) is a member of the Grand Council of the canton of Geneva. There he agreed to answer questions from our editorial staff. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Mr. Thévoz, on Saturday July 17, a new demonstration of Cameroonians took place in Geneva, all opposed to the presence of Mr. Paul Biya on Swiss soil. Did that surprise you? Sylvain Thévoz: No, that didn't surprise me at all. On the contrary. I think it is legitimate for Cameroonians to demonstrate when Paul Biya comes to spend the money of the Cameroonian people in Switzerland, but also in Europe, and everywhere in the world. There is something indecent, shocking that Mr. Paul Biya is a regular at the Intercontinental hotel with all the pomp he is used to and great opacity. You never know why he's coming, when he's leaving, how much time is left. So I understand perfectly well that there is a demonstration. It is completely legitimate in a democratic regime. It's even the least of things, I want to say. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Would you have expected the federal authorities, in view of the events of 2019, to refuse him entry into Swiss territory? Sylvain Thévoz: No. I am not surprised that for the federal authorities the case of 2019 is "closed". In 2019, there were slippages, Paul Biya's bodyguards seriously molested a journalist. They were condemned by the Geneva courts, two years have passed and sadly, realpolitics is back. In the eyes of the federal authorities, Paul Biya is the elected president. Switzerland is playing its role of mediator in the conflict between the government of Paul Biya and the “Ambazonian” power in this conflict in western Cameroon. She is mandated to mediate in the context of this conflict. It is therefore understandable that the Swiss authorities do not want to offend Mr. Biya. The Swiss government is trying to maintain its good offices. But with the ban on demonstrations by opponents of Paul Biya on Saturday and the stalling of the mediation process, the Swiss government is failing doubly, both in its ability to guarantee its true neutrality and to establish its effectiveness. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Let us stay a moment longer on the presence in itself of the Cameroonian president on Swiss soil. You say in this regard, that the decision of the federal authorities to allow Mr. Paul Biya to return to Swiss territory, is a decision of wisdom, a decision imposed by realpolitics, a completely logical decision. Sylvain Thévoz: No, no! I said I wasn't surprised. You asked me if I was surprised. So I said no. And I understand well the cards that the government plays according to its constraints. Now as a socialist deputy and as a militant, of course I find it shocking! It is shocking because Mr. Paul Biya comes to Switzerland, as he sees fit, to spend money that is not his; because he is someone who does not respect human rights, and does not respond in his governance to democratic principles. In my opinion, Switzerland, by virtue of its neutrality, should make Mr. Paul Biya understand, in view of the unrest of 2019, that he is not welcome in Geneva for his private visits and shopping, and that Switzerland may very well continue his mandate as mediator, must continue - I would say - this work of attempting to bring together the parties in conflict, but being much more firm in the face of Mr. Paul Biya to tell him that to come and play princes in Geneva in a luxury hotel is counterproductive in connection with these discussions and that is undesirable. In my opinion, the federal authorities have neither the courage nor the inclination to position themselves in this way. There is therefore an aplaventrism, of course, before the Cameroonian power, which harms Switzerland and its reputation for seriousness. Especially since we never really know what Mr. Paul Biya is doing in Geneva for private purposes. There are a lot of fantasies, rumors surrounding these trips and that is not healthy. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Let us now leave the fact of the presence of Mr. Paul Biya, and talk about the demonstration of which this presence was the cause. During this demonstration, we were able to observe several scenes of violence. In one of your speeches , you accuse Mr. Paul Biya of being the "sower of trouble". Why him, and not the demonstrators? Sylvain Thévoz: I am referring to 2019. It was unacceptable to molest a journalist from Swiss radio and television, on the part of Mr. Biya's bodyguards. It should be remembered that Mr. Biya is protected as a personality by the Geneva police. When he comes to Geneva, it is with the knowledge of the authorities. It can very well be protected, protection is in place. Violence from anywhere is not acceptable, but it can be contained by an adequate police cordon. What I notice is that every time Mr. Paul Biya comes here, there are problems! I regret it. I do not support protesters who physically attack other people, or forcibly enter private spaces. But from what I have been able to observe, it is that there are demonstrators determined to speak out to Paul Biya in a terrible inequality in the balance of power. There is an all-powerful head of state, a potentate who comes to Geneva for a vacation. And in front of the demonstrators, people who have nothing other than their voice and their physical presence to show their disagreement. I cannot put the two on an equal footing. It is in this sense that I think Paul Biya is responsible for the troubles. And if he goes to a place and there are repeated tensions, he should refrain from coming back because he is obviously the trigger, and wondering about the cause of these disorders rather than wanting remove the effects. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Who pays the bill for all the security deployment that is put in place when he is there? Who pays the bill after the excesses during the demonstrations of Cameroonians? Is it Mr. Paul Biya or is it the Geneva taxpayer? Sylvain Thévoz: It is obviously the Canton of Geneva, that is to say the taxes of the Genevans and Genevans. Mr. Paul Biya does not pay to my knowledge for any of this. He comes in his private capacity and is assured of police protection, whereas there are many other places in the city where police patrols are lacking and where security cannot be guaranteed due to the lack of personnel. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: After having authorized it, the cantonal authorities had finally banned the demonstration the day before, citing "a bundle of clues showing a concrete risk of overflow". You have, in another publication, criticized this decision, qualifying it as "blessed bread" for those who accuse Switzerland of playing a double game on the Cameroonian question. Who in the city or canton of Geneva has the authority to ban an event? In your opinion, was the ban inappropriate? Sylvain Thévoz: This ban was clearly excessive. The right to demonstrate is a fundamental, constitutional right. If there were threats, they emerge more from bravado than from a real risk that the Geneva police would not have been able to contain. We are talking about a police who managed the Biden-Putin summit. So two hundred demonstrators on the Place des Nations in Geneva… The police knew that the demonstration was going to take place on Saturday. She was prepared for it. She knew that by authorizing it there would have been neither more nor less overflow than what we had last Saturday by banning it, or even - I think - less tension. But for that it would have been necessary to be more in dialogue, in mediation, in understanding rather than in prohibition. This ban drastically increased the level of tension - Some people were amended, arrested on Friday, they were released on Saturday. It is as if we did everything on the side of Mr. Poggia who is the magistrate in charge of the police and took the decision to ban the demonstration, to raise the tension and somewhere to legitimize the violation of fundamental rights. to demonstrate. To come back to your first question, it is entirely up to the Geneva cantonal authorities to authorize or not a demonstration. The city has no say in authorizing or banning demonstrations. There was a notice from the police and, ultimately, State Councilor Mauro Poggia made the decision by endorsing the notice of his services. Was there any intervention by the Confederation? I have no idea, but I don't think so. Because in my opinion, it is not positive for the Confederation that this demonstration was banned. This gave the image of a country that would not be able to deal with possible excesses, and which would prevent people from demonstrating in the name of a potential threat. This weakened Switzerland's position in the mediation process, in its neutrality. Many people, following the ban on the demonstration, thought that Switzerland is not neutral, that it is playing Paul Biya's game, which we can only deplore. This has given rise to more fantasies and rumors, whereas in a democracy we have the right to clear and transparent communication. This is why I questioned the Geneva Council of State on this subject by sending it an urgent written question so that it could answer us in full transparency. It is important to know whether the Confederation was at least consulted before Mr Poggia decided to ban this demonstration. Because this decision has a direct impact on Switzerland's image and role. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: The decision to ban the demonstration was taken and communicated on Friday, so one day before it took place. An appeal seems to have been lodged with the administrative court. But he seems to have run out of time to rule on it in time. Do you think that all this was done on purpose by the cantonal authorities? Sylvain Thévoz: No. I really think the police and Mr. Poggia misjudged the potential threat from the protesters. Or because of the July holidays - they felt they did not have sufficient forces to deal with this possible threat. Which is astonishing for a police force which managed the summit in Geneva Biden-Poutine. More certainly, they wanted above all to avoid the damage to the image for Geneva, as we had been able to see it in 2019, with press articles that had gone as far as the New York Times, in the international press, where we saw cannons of the Geneva police spray the demonstrators. There was in this ban a desire to preserve the image of Geneva before maintaining democratic rights, the right to demonstrate. This is regrettable. Geneva hosted the Biden-Poutin summit. It still had to be able to contain 200 anti-Biya demonstrators. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: You are one of the public figures of the city of Geneva who worked in 2019 for the Cameroonian president to be declared "persona non grata" in Switzerland. You had also initiated a petition to this effect. Did you see all this trouble coming two years ago? New events are still being announced today. Sylvain Thévoz: Yes, of course. There is no doubt that the demonstrators are resolute. Each time Paul Biya returns, they will be there to demonstrate, to proclaim their feeling of injustice and the rejection of this character. This is why it is necessary to intervene on the causes of the problem and not its effects. The troublemaker is Paul Biya. He comes to Geneva on a private basis, on vacation, and his safety must be covered by the taxes of the inhabitants, and the image damage is for Geneva. This is not acceptable. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: In Cameroonian opinion, there are voices that maintain that as a man of the Left, you, Sylvain Thévoz, are only in your role; that your opposition to the presence of Paul Biya in Geneva, Switzerland, would thus only have an essentially ideological basis. You cannot have an objective judgment on this matter. Can you tell us, without qualms, without any prejudices, if you really saw this spiral of unrest coming around the presence of Paul Biya in Geneva? Sylvain Thévoz: Speaking with Cameroonians, Swiss people of Cameroonian origin, they are shocked by the fact that Paul Biya remains in power, with serious doubts about who really leads Cameroon, as well as about electoral process, on his fortune. They see this very old man arrive here, soon at the end of his life, who comes to spend the money that is not his. This is not acceptable, whether one is right or left does not matter in this finding. These are facts. You don't have to be Left or Right to find this shocking. Any human being can understand this anger, identify with the oppressed, repressed people in Cameroon and see the inequality behind it. It is not a fight for the Left, but for human rights. A fight for Geneva, which is a city, a canton that likes to claim its peaceful side, to remind people that it is the host city for the signing of the Geneva conventions, and in the service of multilateralism. But this role also implies an ethical position, fairness of treatment, and then somewhere an ability to indicate to people, to infrequent personalities, that they are not necessarily welcome, by strengthening somewhat this neutrality that does not want say complacency or collaboration. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Are you angry today, disappointed that you weren't listened to in 2019? Sylvain Thévoz: I think I have been heard. I have received a lot of messages of support. The petition has given visibility to this fight and courage to many activists. I am neither angry nor disappointed because I am not naive about the existing balance of power, nor about the complacency of certain circles with the powerful, whether the latter have blood on their hands or not. But I am determined to continue this fight for the defense of human rights. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON* From the Right too, who in 2019 opposed your approach? Sylvain Thévoz: It's not a surprise, when we know that there are people who have little temper, for whom human rights will always come before business and business, and who are so legitimist that if Mr. Biya declares himself Head of State, they will bow down to him. I can hear the arguments of those who say “Geneva is a platform of multilateralism, it welcomes hundreds of heads of state every year, and there are many who are not frequentable. It makes a difference. For the Biden-Putin summit, it was politics. They came, they left. If Mr. Poutine came for shopping and went boating on Lake Geneva, I think it would be legitimate to demonstrate, to denounce his presence and his policies. I am not angry, angry or disappointed. This is part of the balance of power and a real political debate. What happened last Saturday only shows that it's going to happen again and again. We must do a work of conviction, of protest, but with intelligence to try to convince in any case a majority of the Geneva population that Geneva is not a place that sells out or is given to the highest bidder. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: Are you going to start a new petition to have Paul Biya declared “persona non grata” in Geneva, Switzerland? Sylvain Thévoz: No, I don't think so. As it stands, given the balance of power in parliament, this petition would be treated in the same way as the previous one, it would be evacuated. If we have to come back with a parliamentary object at the Geneva level, we must find another angle of attack. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON*: What for example? *Sylvain Thév: I submitted an urgent written question. I await the responses of the Council of State concerning the ban on the demonstration. We need to better understand the issues concerning Paul Biya, the role of Switzerland especially in mediation. From there, you may need to drop other items. But above all, we must continue to demonstrate, write, speak, get together, to create a balance of power that is positive for us. All the means are good for that, at the parliamentary level as extra-parliamentary. MUNTUNEWS CAMEROON: If Mr. Paul Biya were to stay in Switzerland for humanitarian reasons, to seek treatment for example, will you still oppose it? Sylvain Thévoz: What bothers me is the lack of transparency, it's opacity, the inability to have factual elements on this subject. This shadow theater does little for democracy. If he comes for humanitarian reasons, why hide him?
